The Chinese Herbalist

Classical Thinking, Custom Formulas, the ultimate clinically focused herbal program you have been waiting for.

a 6-module program with JulieAnn and Andrew Nugent-Head

This Chinese Medicine herb course has been designed by JulieAnn and Andrew Nugent‐Head and reflects the many years of study and clinical practice that they gained first through tutelage under the late Dr. Li Hongxiang in Beijing (one of the last known Chinese medical doctors to still practice in a completely traditional manner) and subsequently through their own experience in 20+ years of clinical practice and teaching.

The Chinese Herbalist Training Program is a 300 hour hybrid online/in person training program. Completed over two years, it features 108 in person learning hours over six weekend modules and 122+ hours of online lectures and presentations. Online learning allows participants to listen and review lectures at their own pace on their own schedule. In person training means direct interaction with the teacher to answer questions, expand lecture material, and work physically with the herbs, touching, brewing and tasting them under teacher guidance. Meeting in person also builds strong relationships among students and a community dedicated to helping each other succeed.

Course description / learning objectives:

  • Leave the action/indication paradigm and learn to practice herbs from the Nei Jing as all of our medical ancestors did–modern Chinese medicine has shown us that action/indication focused herb training simply does not work as well in acute or complex pattern cases.
  • Stop rote memorization and learn why herbs were chosen in the classic formulas. There is no secret to classical herbalism, the books are clear–but each classic has to be explained by teachers who live and breathe classical medicine in their practice, seeing patients across every aspect of illness.
  • Realize there is nothing magical about a classic formula– it was classical thinking that lead to choosing the herbs for the patient and the condition which made the formula effective. By learning to think as our medical ancestors did, every custom prescription we write becomes a classic formula.
  • Move beyond didactic theory and see classical thinking, custom formulas in action–this training program includes in depth case studies of real patients being seen by the teachers and two weeks observing them treating in the most dynamic teaching clinic anywhere.
  • Have teachers committed to your success–sitting in a class with no personal relationship to the presenter does not guarantee learning. Building a mentor relationship with your teacher does.

At the end of the program, participants receive a Certificate of Completion from the Center for Traditional Studies.

Returning Our Focus to the Flavour and Nature of Herbs

Andrew Nugent-Head
Andrew Nugent‐Head is the founder of the Association for Traditional Studies (ATS), a 501c3 organization dedicated to the preservation, documentation and dissemination of China’s traditional knowledge. Andrew moved to China in 1986 to study Chinese medicine, martial arts, and internal cultivation. Having spent his entire adult life in China dedicated to these arts, he has obtained the highest quality education possible in traditional, mentor‐disciple relationships for over 25 years. Andrew’s studies and work have been featured on French and German television, the NBC Sunday Today Show, and on ABC News Special. He also worked on and appeared in the ‘Mystery of Qi’ episode of the Bill Moyers PBS documentary series, Healing and the Mind. He has been featured in newspapers across the United States and has written prolifically on Chinese Medicine, culture and the importance of preserving traditional knowledge worldwide. Andrew has translated six books, produced over 400 educational videos and translated for and assisted practitioners of Chinese Medicine, Yin Style Bagua martial arts, Daoyin practices, and Calligraphy during more than 140 seminars between 1993 and 2003. With the passing of his teachers, Andrew now dedicates himself to bringing the practice of Chinese medicine as he learned it to fellow practitioners, opening a teaching clinic in Asheville, NC, and teaching internationally.

JulieAnn Nugent-Head
JulieAnn earned a master’s degree in Oriental Medicine and completed hundreds of hours of clinical practice, yet without residency under skilled doctors, she did not feel her training was sufficient to treat serious illness. Summer internships in 2003 and 2004 at Beijing’s KuanJie Hospital underscored the need for advanced study. JulieAnn thus moved to Beijing to learn Chinese and study under two “last generation practitioners”, born and educated prior to 1949. Working with the Association for Traditional Studies, JulieAnn helped film and document octogenarian Dr Li HongXiang lecturing on the classic books of Chinese medicine; reading character by character, pulling out dictionaries, calligraphy brushes, clinical examples and personal stories to illustrate the tangibility of the text. JulieAnn can never thank Dr Li HongXiang enough for bringing classical texts and Chinese philosophy to life. JulieAnn and husband Andrew entered the doctorate level medical program at the ZheJiang Chinese Medicine University in 2010, and completed doctorate studies with a focus on the classical perspective of herbs. With the changing visa laws and growing cost of living in Asia with 3 children, JulieAnn & Andrew returned to the United States in 2014. Through their not‐for‐profit teaching clinic in Asheville, NC, online curriculae and lecturing internationally, JulieAnn and Andrew work to promote classically based, clinically focused, tangible and effective Chinese medicine.
