Enlivening Spirit and Lengthening the Years

Enlivening the Spirit and Lengthening the Years: Classically Inspired Herbal Teas to Maintain Health

Whether you are new to herbs and not sure where to begin, or an experienced herbalist looking to access deeper understanding, this seminar is designed for you. Using the oldest herbal textbook as our guide, JulieAnn Nugent-Head opens up the two thousand years old Shen Nong Ben Cao’s chapter on herbs for health and longevity. An experienced clinical herbalist and farmer of medicinal plants, JulieAnn knows which herbs taste delicious as a ‘teasane’, what they do for our well-being, and the best brewing methods to use.

Participants will learn which herbs the Shen Nong Ben Cao considers to lighten the body, benefit the qi, and prevent aging. Participants will also learn to use Nei Jing theory to choose which substances are appropriate for us or our patients.  This seminar includes tasting a variety of herbal teas to experience how they feel in the body. Participants will leave with the ability to confidently use and prescribe 20 herbs as health teas, as well as understand how to explore other herbs on their own.

Returning Our Focus to the Flavour and Nature of Herbs

The Yin and Yang of Herbs

JulieAnn earned a master’s degree in Oriental Medicine and completed hundreds of hours of clinical practice, yet without residency under skilled doctors, she did not feel her training was sufficient to treat serious illness. Summer internships in 2003 and 2004 at Beijing’s KuanJie Hospital underscored the need for advanced study. JulieAnn thus moved to Beijing to learn Chinese and study under two “last generation practitioners”, born and educated prior to 1949. Working with the Association for Traditional Studies, JulieAnn helped film and document octogenarian Dr Li HongXiang lecturing on the classic books of Chinese medicine; reading character by character, pulling out dictionaries, calligraphy brushes, clinical examples and personal stories to illustrate the tangibility of the text. JulieAnn can never thank Dr Li HongXiang enough for bringing classical texts and Chinese philosophy to life. JulieAnn and husband Andrew entered the doctorate level medical program at the ZheJiang Chinese Medicine University in 2010, and completed doctorate studies with a focus on the classical perspective of herbs. With the changing visa laws and growing cost of living in Asia with 3 children, JulieAnn & Andrew returned to the United States in 2014. Through their not‐for‐profit teaching clinic in Asheville, NC, online curriculae and lecturing internationally, JulieAnn and Andrew work to promote classically based, clinically focused, tangible and effective Chinese medicine.
